Teatime with Jennie Seelye on the Smoky Valley Limited!
Back at the turn of the last century as A.B. Seelye built his monolithic mansion on north Buckeye Avenue, his wife, Jennie Taylor Seelye, had visions of parties and other high society events in her new, lavish home. Mrs. Seelye often hosted teas for her social acquaintances, featuring finger sandwiches, scrumptious desserts made by the mansion chefs, and fine tea. As a special Mother’s Day weekend tribute to Jenny Seelye, the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad invites you to a special version of the Smoky Valley Limited for “Teatime with Jennie Seelye.” Abilene baker Amanda Collins is recreating some dessert recipes that would have been served in the mansion, along with finger sandwiches and black English breakfast tea. Our two-hour train ride through the Smoky Hill River Valley includes narration about Mrs. Seelye and a description of what early 20th century high society Abilene might have been like.
