Every year, the rest of the free world joins us here in Abilene in remembering our city’s most prominent citizen, Dwight D. Eisenhower, World War II’s Supreme Allied Commander and the 34th President of the United States. And on the Smoky Valley Limited dinner train, we celebrate our favorite son in a special way: Bill Nicks, an Eisenhower impersonator from Kansas City, rides our train to visit with passengers and remind us of Ike’s folksy charm. Join us on Saturday, October 10, as we present a 136th birthday tribute to the President. Amanda’s Bakery and Bistro of Abilene is preparing a roast beef dinner, with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans and a salad. And for dessert, Amanda is baking a special birthday cake (sorry, it won’t be big enough to hold 136 candles!). Coffee, tea and water are complimentary, and soda, beer or wine can be purchased with your meal. Our train trip begins at 6:00 p.m. as we depart Abilene’s historic Rock Island Depot, for a two-hour journey across the Smoky Hill River Valley with a stop at the Hoffman Mill and General Store in Enterprise, Kansas. As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, join us in this special Eisenhower tribute on the. Abilene and Smoky Valley, the Kansas Heritage Railroad!
