It’s a Springtime double feature! On Saturday, May 30, the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad celebrates the season premiere of two of Abilene’s treasured tourist attractions. It’s the season opening of Old Abilene Town, our city’s monument to the 1860s cow town days, when cowboys drove Texas cattle to Abilene to be shipped to market on the Kansas Pacific Railroad. Old Abilene will be alive with gunfight reenactments, cancan dancers at the Alamo Saloon, and a genuine feeling of the Old West. And May 30 is also the first Saturday matinee for the Great Plains Theater, where you can see a matinee performance of “Guys and Dolls,” then have dinner on the Smoky Valley Limited dinner train at 6:00 p.m. We’ve reserved our Eveland Creek car for theater goers and the Chicago and Enterprise cars are available for Old Abilene visitors and other passengers who want to experience a two-hour train ride through the Smoky Hill River Valley. Amanda’s Bakery and Bistro is preparing roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed vegetables and a dinner salad, with Crème brûlée for dessert. Coffee, tea and water are complimentary, and soda, beer or wine can be purchased with your meal. The GPT dinner and theater package is only available by calling the Great Plains Theater box office at 785-263-4574. But if you just want dinner, you can purchase your Smoky Valley Limited dinner tickets here. Celebrate the opening of Old Abilene and the Great Plains Theater for another season, and join us on the Abilene and Smoky Valley, the Kansas Heritage Railroad!
